Lipid Bilayer Assembly

Lipid bilayer assembly is the organization of amphiphilic lipids into a two-layer membrane that forms the basic structural framework of cell membranes and many engineered biomaterials. In an aqueous environment, hydrophilic head groups interact with water while hydrophobic tails cluster inward, driving spontaneous self-assembly through the hydrophobic effect; controlled methods can produce vesicles, planar supported membranes, or other membrane architectures. In bioengineering, these systems provide tunable platforms for studying membrane proteins, modeling cellular interfaces, developing biosensors, and designing drug-delivery vehicles. Their composition, fluidity, and surface properties can be adjusted to investigate biological function and improve therapeutic technologies.

Biological membranes are more than just a barrier separating cell cytoplasm from the outside environment. They are highly dynamic and help maintain the integrity and physiological stability of the cells as well as membrane-bound organelles. Membranes also play vital roles in cell-to-cell and intracellular communication. A large chunk of any biological membrane is composed of phospholipids. These lipids have a heterogeneous distribution across different subcellular organelles and even between...
