Organic Waste Treatment

Organic waste treatment is the controlled processing of biodegradable materials, such as food scraps, agricultural residues, and sewage-derived solids, to reduce pollution and recover useful resources. Biological treatment relies on microbial metabolism: under aerobic conditions, microorganisms break down organic matter into stabilized compost, while anaerobic digestion converts it in oxygen-free reactors into biogas and nutrient-rich digestate. Bioengineering applies principles of microbiology, reactor design, and process control to optimize moisture, temperature, pH, oxygen availability, and retention time. These systems support waste reduction, renewable energy generation, nutrient recovery, and more sustainable management of organic materials.

Biological Treatment of Effluent and Waste Water

2026

Biological wastewater treatment relies on the metabolic activity of microorganisms to remove pollutants from sewage. In modern treatment systems, this process is organized into sequential stages that progressively reduce solid material, dissolved organic matter, and microbial contamination. Each stage plays a distinct role in improving water quality and preparing the effluent for safe discharge or reuse.Primary and Secondary TreatmentPrimary treatment is a physical process that removes large...

2012

Laboratory-scale anaerobic digesters allow scientists to research new ways of optimizing existing applications of anaerobic biotechnology and to evaluate the methane producing potential of various organic wastes. This article introduces a generalized model for the construction, inoculation, operation, and monitoring of a laboratory-scale continuously stirred anaerobic digester.

Proper Waste Disposal

Robert M. Rioux and Taslima A. Zaman, Pennsylvania State University, Pennsylvania, PA Users are responsible for the proper disposal of the waste generated during their work. Improper waste disposal may severely endanger public health and/or the environment. The handling of hazardous waste must be regulated from the moment of generation until its disposal at its offsite final destination facility. A waste management system must be devised before work begins on any laboratory activity. Users...

2025

This protocol presents a scalable method for converting food waste into biodegradable polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) bioplastics. It utilizes arrested anaerobic digestion for food waste pretreatment, halophilic microbial fermentation for PHA biosynthesis, and a chemical-free downstream process for PHA recovery.
