Pars Plana Vitrectomy

Pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) is a microsurgical procedure that removes the vitreous gel from the eye to treat conditions affecting the retina and posterior segment. Through small ports placed in the pars plana, surgeons use a vitrector to cut and aspirate vitreous while balanced salt solution maintains intraocular pressure; illumination and forceps enable visualization and tissue manipulation. PPV supports treatment of retinal detachment, vitreous hemorrhage, epiretinal membranes, and complications of diabetic eye disease. In bioengineering, its development informs miniaturized surgical instruments, fluidics, intraocular visualization, and biomaterials designed to improve precision, safety, and postoperative healing.

Retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) replacement strategies and gene-based therapy are considered for several retinal degenerative conditions. For clinical translation, large eye animal models are required to study surgical techniques applicable in patients. Here we present a rabbit model for subretinal surgery geared towards RPE transplantation, which is versatile and cost-efficient.

Many vision-threatening ocular diseases are associated with dysfunctional retinal microvessels. Therefore, the measurement of retinal arteriole responses is important to investigate the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms. This article describes a detailed protocol for mouse retinal arteriole isolation and preparation to assess the effects of vasoactive substances on vascular diameter.

Utilizing Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation to Improve Language Function in Stroke Patients with Chronic Non-fluent Aphasia

We explore the use of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) to improve language abilities in patients with chronic stroke and non-fluent aphasia. After identifying a site in the right frontal gyrus for each patient that responds optimally to stimulation, we target this site during ten days of rTMS treatment.
