Photo Diode

A photodiode is a semiconductor device that converts incident light into an electrical signal, enabling quantitative optical measurement in research and technology. Typically operated under reverse bias, its p-n or PIN junction absorbs photons and generates electron-hole pairs, producing a photocurrent proportional to light intensity. In bioengineering, photodiodes support pulse oximetry, fluorescence detection, optical biosensors, microscopy, and biomedical imaging by translating changes in light into measurable data. Their sensitivity, response speed, and spectral range influence how accurately systems monitor physiological signals, detect biomolecular interactions, and analyze cells or tissues.

Source: Espinoza, R., et al. Real-Time, Two-Color Stimulated Raman Scattering Imaging of Mouse Brain for Tissue Diagnosis. J. Vis. Exp. (2022). The video demonstrates two-color stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) imaging of mouse brain tissue sections. Two synchronized laser beams are directed onto the tissue section to excite molecular vibrations, resulting in a relative intensity change in the beams. Lipids and proteins in the tissue are detected using distinct frequency pairs of the laser...
