Cytotoxicity Screening

Cytotoxicity screening is a set of biological assays used to determine whether a substance damages or kills cells, making it important for evaluating drug safety, environmental exposures, and biomaterials. In a typical test, cultured cells are exposed to defined concentrations of a compound, and changes in viability are measured through metabolic activity, membrane integrity, cell proliferation, or apoptosis. Researchers use dose-response relationships and measures such as inhibitory concentration to compare toxic effects across treatments. In biology and biomedical research, cytotoxicity screening helps identify promising therapeutic candidates, characterize mechanisms of cellular injury, and detect harmful effects before more advanced studies.

2025

This video describes an in vitro fluorometric assay to assess the effects of artificial tear formulations on the cellular metabolic activity of corneal epithelial cells using resazurin-based Alamar blue solution. A non-toxic formulation maintains the cells in a healthy, metabolically active state, facilitating the reduction of resazurin into a highly fluorescent resorufin.

2025

The video showcases a flow cytometry-based assay for assaying immunodominance in cytotoxic T lymphocytes or CTL responses. Injected fluorescent target cells exhibit varying fluorescence corresponding to immunogenic epitopes. Post-spleen collection and sorting reveal a reduction in high-intensity fluorescent cells, confirming immunodominance in CTL responses.
