This study investigates the effects of artificial tear formulations on corneal epithelial cells (CECs) using the alamarBlue assay. It highlights the importance of maintaining a healthy tear film to prevent cellular damage and infection.
The alamarBlue assay provides a sensitive, quantitative readout of cellular metabolic activity, enabling early-stage assessment of formulation cytotoxicity in ophthalmic drug development. By linking mitochondrial function to fluorescent output, the method supports mechanistic de-risking of artificial tear formulations prior to in vivo testing. This predictive confidence aids in prioritizing candidates with favorable ocular surface compatibility, reducing late-stage attrition in preclinical pipelines.
The assay fits within the ophthalmic discovery continuum, positioning metabolic profiling after primary screening and before mechanistic follow-up in lead optimization.
