Surgical Clipping

Surgical clipping is a neurosurgical technique that treats certain blood-vessel abnormalities, most commonly intracranial aneurysms, by isolating them from normal circulation. During the procedure, a surgeon places a small metal clip across the aneurysm’s neck, stopping blood from entering the weakened vessel wall while preserving flow through adjacent arteries. This approach can prevent aneurysm growth, rupture, or recurrent bleeding and may be used for both ruptured and unruptured aneurysms, depending on their size, location, and anatomy. Understanding surgical clipping connects vascular biology with microsurgery, imaging, and clinical decision-making in the management of cerebrovascular disease.

Source: Rennert, R. C., et al. Comprehensive Endovascular and Open Surgical Management of Cerebral Arteriovenous Malformations. J. Vis. Exp. (2017).This video demonstrates the open surgical resection of a cerebral arteriovenous malformation (AVM) in a human brain. The procedure involves creating a bone flap, accessing the subarachnoid space, identifying and occluding feeding arteries and draining veins, and carefully removing the AVM. Intraoperative angiography confirms complete resection,...
