Oncogene Overexpression

Oncogene overexpression is the abnormal production of excessive RNA or protein from a gene that promotes cell proliferation, survival, or other cancer-associated behaviors. It can arise through gene amplification, increased transcription driven by regulatory changes, or enhanced mRNA stability, causing persistently elevated oncogenic signaling that disrupts normal growth control. In cancer research, measuring oncogene overexpression in tumors and model systems helps identify molecular subtypes, assess disease mechanisms, and evaluate biomarkers or therapies that inhibit downstream pathways or the overexpressed protein itself. Understanding when and how overexpression drives tumor progression also supports more precise treatment strategies and studies of therapeutic resistance.
