Monomer Protonation

Monomer protonation is the reversible addition of a proton to a monomer, an acid–base process that changes the molecule’s charge distribution and reactivity. A Brønsted acid transfers a proton to an electron-rich site, forming a conjugate acid; the extent of protonation depends on factors such as pKa, solvent, temperature, and reactant concentration. In chemistry and polymer science, protonated monomers can serve as activated intermediates in cationic polymerization, influencing reaction rates, chain growth, and product structure. Studying this equilibrium also helps researchers interpret spectroscopic data, control reaction conditions, and design monomers with targeted reactivity.

Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University The United States consumes a large amount of energy – the current rate is around 97.5 quadrillion BTUs annually. The vast majority (90%) of this energy comes from non-renewable fuel sources. This energy is used for electricity (39%), transportation (28%), industry (22%), and residential/commercial use (11%). As the world has a limited supply of these non-renewable sources, the United States (among others) is...

Lipid polyesters constitute the structural components of two cell wall modifications, the plant cuticle and suberin-containing diffusion barriers. In this video, we describe a method to depolymerize cutin from whole delipidated leaves. The method can be applied to investigating mutants compromised in either cutin or suberin biosynthesis.

Proton (¹H) NMR: Chemical Shift

Organic molecules primarily contain carbon and hydrogen atoms. While all the hydrogen isotopes are NMR-active, protium or hydrogen-1 is the most abundant. It has a significant energy separation between its nuclear spin states due to its large gyromagnetic ratio. As per Boltzmann's distribution, an increase in the energy separation implies a greater excess population of nuclei available for excitation, resulting in a strong NMR absorption signal. Absorption signals of all the protium nuclei in a...
