Neutralization Reaction

A neutralization reaction is an acid–base reaction in which acidic and basic species react to reduce their characteristic properties, commonly forming water and a salt. In aqueous solution, hydrogen ions from the acid combine with hydroxide ions from the base to produce water, while the remaining ions form the salt; the reaction can shift the solution’s pH toward neutrality depending on the reactant amounts and strengths. Chemists use neutralization reactions in acid–base titrations to determine unknown concentrations and construct titration curves. They also support pH control in industrial processing, environmental treatment, laboratory protocols, and everyday products such as antacids.

An acid-base reaction is one in which a hydrogen ion, H+, is transferred from one chemical species to another. Such reactions are of central importance to numerous natural and technological processes, ranging from the chemical transformations within cells or lakes and oceans to the industrial-scale production of fertilizers, pharmaceuticals, and other substances essential to the society. There are several ways of defining an acid. In the context of aqueous solutions, an acid is a substance...

Acids and bases play several important roles in biology. The pH of a biological system can significantly impact the function of biological molecules, including enzymes, proteins, and nucleic acids. For example, enzymes have optimal pH ranges for their activity, and changes in pH can denature or alter their structure, affecting their function. Acids and bases also play a crucial role in cellular signaling and communication. The pH of the extracellular fluid around cells can influence the...

This study describes an imaging-based micro-neutralization assay to analyze the antigenic relationships between viruses. The protocol employs a flatbed scanner and has four steps, including titration, titration quantitation, neutralization, and neutralization quantitation. The assay works well with current circulating influenza A(H1N1)pdm09, A(H3N2), and B viruses.

Oxidation and Reduction Some chemical reactions can be classified as reduction-oxidation reactions, or redox reactions. Oxidation is the process of matter, like an atom or ionic molecule, losing one or more electrons, and reduction is the process of the matter gaining one or more electrons. Oxidation States Each atom in a molecule has its own oxidation state or oxidation number. The oxidation state describes how oxidized a molecule is relative to its free elemental form. The oxidation state is...

Source: Smaa Koraym at Johns Hopkins University, MD, USA Collecting Data for Calculating the Heat Capacity of a CalorimeterExpand This experiment will use a constant-pressure calorimeter made of two stacked polystyrene cups, a cardboard lid, and a probe measuring the temperature of a solution in real-time. Polystyrene is a good insulator, so you can assume that no heat is exchanged between the inside and outside of the cups. The calorimeter itself will absorb some heat, which you'll account...
