Medical Device Sterilization

Medical device sterilization is the validated process of eliminating all viable microorganisms from instruments and equipment before clinical use, helping prevent healthcare-associated infections. It works through physical or chemical mechanisms such as moist heat from pressurized steam, reactive gases such as ethylene oxide, or ionizing radiation that damages microbial proteins and genetic material; the selected method depends on the device’s materials, design, and heat or moisture tolerance. Sterilization is essential for surgical instruments, implants, and other devices that contact sterile tissue or the bloodstream. Effective validation, packaging, monitoring, and maintenance of sterility support patient safety and regulatory quality control.

Source: Kay Stewart, RVT, RLATG, CMAR; Valerie A. Schroeder, RVT, RLATG. University of Notre Dame, IN In 1959 The 3 R's were introduced by W.M.S. Russell and R.L. Burch in their book The Principles of Humane Experimental Technique. The 3 R's are replacement, reduction, and refinement of the use of animals in research. The use of cell lines and tissue cultures that originated from research animals is a replacement technique, as it allows for many experiments to be conducted in vitro. Harvesting...

Validation of Therapeutic Agent Conjugation to Polyvinyl Alcohol-Coated Medical Devices

2024

Here, we present a protocol for derivatizing medical devices with protein therapeutics by conjugating protein therapeutics to a polyvinyl alcohol membrane casted on medical devices. Conjugation of protein-based therapeutics allows for localized and concentrated delivery and is a cost-effective approach that requires vastly lower drug amounts for dosing while minimizing off-target effects.
