Thermometer Type Selection

Thermometer type selection is the process of choosing a temperature-measurement device that fits a patient’s condition, age, measurement site, and clinical setting. Selection depends on how the device detects heat, such as electronic sensors that convert temperature into a digital reading or infrared sensors that estimate temperature from emitted thermal radiation without direct contact. In clinical practice, comparing contact and noncontact devices, measurement speed, hygiene requirements, ease of use, and expected accuracy supports consistent assessment of fever and hypothermia. Appropriate selection can improve patient comfort, reduce cross-contamination risks, and strengthen decisions about monitoring, diagnosis, and treatment.

Natural selection influences the frequencies of particular alleles and phenotypes within populations in several different ways. Primarily, natural selection can be directional, stabilizing, or disruptive. Directional selection favors one extreme trait and shifts the population towards that phenotype while selecting against individuals displaying alternate traits. Stabilizing selection favors an intermediate trait with a narrow range of variation. Deviation from the optimal phenotype towards an...

Any physical property that depends consistently and reproducibly on temperature can be used as the basis of a thermometer. For example, volume increases with temperature for most substances. This property is the basis for the common alcohol thermometer and the original mercury thermometers. Other properties used to measure temperature include electrical resistance, color, and the emission of infrared radiation. As many physical properties depend on temperature, the variety of thermometers is...

The definition of temperature in terms of molecular motion suggests that there should be a lowest possible temperature, where the average kinetic energy of molecules is zero (or the minimum allowed by quantum mechanics). Experiments confirm the existence of such a temperature, called absolute zero. An absolute temperature scale is one whose zero point is absolute zero. Such scales are convenient in science because several physical quantities, such as the volume of an ideal gas, are directly...

Fitness Widespread variation of phenotypes in natural populations provides the raw material for evolution, which is the change in the inherited traits of populations over successive generations. Natural selection is one of the main mechanisms of evolution and requires variable traits to be heritable and associated with differential survival and/or reproductive success. Phenotypes that correlate with greater success will have more offspring that survive to reproduce in the next generation, and...
