Forehead Temperature Scan

A forehead temperature scan is a noninvasive clinical method that estimates body temperature by measuring infrared radiation emitted from the skin of the forehead. A contactless infrared sensor detects this radiation and converts it into a temperature reading, while measurement accuracy depends on positioning, distance, ambient conditions, and factors such as sweat or recent activity. Clinicians use forehead temperature scans for rapid fever screening, triage, and routine monitoring in hospitals, clinics, and public health settings. Although convenient and hygienic, the result represents skin temperature and may require confirmation with a more direct measurement when clinical decisions depend on precise core temperature.

During most eukaryotic translation processes, the small 40S ribosome subunit scans an mRNA from its 5' end until it encounters the first start AUG codon. The large 60S ribosomal subunit then joins the smaller one to initiate protein synthesis. The location of the translation initiation is largely determined by the nucleotides near the start codon as there may be multiple translation initiation sites present on the mRNA. Marilyn Kozak discovered that the sequence RCCAUGG (where R stands for...

Source: Danielle N. Beatty and Taylor D. Sparks, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) is an important measurement to characterize thermal properties of materials. DSC is used primarily to calculate the amount of heat stored in a material as it heats up (heat capacity) as well as the heat absorbed or released during chemical reactions or phase changes. However, measurement of this heat can also lead to...

Chemical Kinetics The reaction rate is the speed at which a chemical reaction occurs. The reaction rate is defined as the change in concentration of a component in the reaction with time. The speed of a reaction depends on several factors, including the concentration of reactants and the temperature at which the reaction is performed. Each reactant contributes to the speed of the reaction by a specific factor. This relationship is defined by the reaction rate law. Rate Law The rate law is an...

Source: Smaa Koraym at Johns Hopkins University, MD, USA Temperature Dependent Decomposition of Hydrogen PeroxideExpand We suggest that students work in pairs for this experiment. Equipment controls may vary. In this lab, you'll perform a decomposition reaction where a single compound breaks down into two or more simpler products. You will observe the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen. This decomposition happens very slowly, so you will use iron (III) nitrate as a...
