Tympanic Membrane

The tympanic membrane, or eardrum, is a thin, cone-shaped tissue that separates the external auditory canal from the middle ear and converts sound into mechanical motion. Sound waves cause the membrane to vibrate, transmitting energy through its attachment to the malleus and the other auditory ossicles, while its position and appearance can also reflect pressure or disease in the middle ear. In clinical practice, otoscopic examination assesses membrane color, contour, mobility, and integrity to help identify otitis media, fluid accumulation, retraction, scarring, or perforation. Understanding these findings supports diagnosis, treatment planning, and evaluation of conductive hearing loss.

2024

Assessing tympanic membrane temperature involves using a tympanic membrane thermometer (TMT). Here is a step-by-step guide: Step 1: Begin by practicing good hand hygiene to prevent the transmission of microorganisms. Step 2: Turn on the thermometer and wait until the ready sign appears on the screen to ensure accurate measurement. Step 3: Slide the probe cover in place to prevent cross-contamination. Step 4: Instruct the patient to tilt their head to the side for comfort and check for cerumen...
