3d Esophageal Scaffold

A 3D esophageal scaffold is a biomaterial framework designed to reproduce the structure and physical environment of the esophagus, supporting research on tissue formation and repair. Its interconnected architecture provides surfaces and spatial cues for cell attachment, organization, differentiation, and nutrient diffusion while helping maintain the mechanical properties needed for esophageal function. In developmental biology, these scaffolds can model how epithelial, muscle, and connective-tissue compartments develop and interact in three dimensions. They also support tissue-engineering studies, disease modeling, and evaluation of regenerative strategies, offering experimentally controllable systems that complement animal models and conventional two-dimensional cultures.

2023

This video describes an in vitro culture technique to generate human organotypic esophageal constructs by co-culturing primary human esophageal fibroblast and squamous epithelial cells within a decellularized porcine scaffold. These 3D culture models mimic the function and physiology of their in vivo tissue counterparts.

This manuscript describes the production, characterization and potential uses of a tissue engineered 3D esophageal construct prepared from normal primary human esophageal fibroblast and squamous epithelial cells seeded within a de-cellularized porcine scaffold. The results demonstrate the formation of a mature stratified epithelium similar to the normal human esophagus.

Interlinked Macroporous 3D Scaffolds from Microgel Rods

2022

Microgel rods with complementary reactive groups are produced via microfluidics with the ability to interlink in aqueous solution. The anisometric microgels jam and interlink into stable constructs with larger pores compared to spherical-based systems. Microgels modified with GRGDS-PC form macroporous 3D constructs that can be used for cell culture.
