Doxorubicin Toxicity

Doxorubicin toxicity is the harmful cellular and tissue response to doxorubicin, an anthracycline chemotherapy drug whose effects can limit treatment and influence developing organisms. The drug can intercalate into DNA, inhibit topoisomerase II, and generate oxidative stress, disrupting replication, transcription, and cell survival. In developmental biology, these mechanisms help researchers examine how chemotherapy exposure affects embryonic cells, tissue formation, organ development, and cell differentiation. Experimental models of doxorubicin toxicity can clarify dose- and stage-dependent responses, identify vulnerable developmental pathways, and support evaluation of protective strategies and safer therapeutic approaches.
