Directed Energy Deposition

Directed Energy Deposition is an additive manufacturing process that builds or repairs components by depositing material directly where it is needed, making it valuable for engineering applications involving large, complex, or damaged parts. A focused heat source creates a localized melt pool while powder or wire feedstock enters the pool and solidifies along a programmed toolpath, forming successive layers. The process supports near-net-shape fabrication, component repair, and surface modification, while enabling efficient material use and flexible production of metal structures. Researchers also study how energy input, deposition rate, and path planning influence microstructure, dimensional accuracy, and mechanical performance.

Phase Transitions: Sublimation and Deposition

2020

Some solids can transition directly into the gaseous state, bypassing the liquid state, via a process known as sublimation. At room temperature and standard pressure, a piece of dry ice (solid CO2) sublimes, appearing to gradually disappear without ever forming any liquid. Snow and ice sublimate at temperatures below the melting point of water, a slow process that may be accelerated by winds and the reduced atmospheric pressures at high altitudes. When solid iodine is warmed, the solid sublimes...

We describe the experimental method to deposit nanostructured oxide thin films by nanosecond Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) in the presence of a background gas. By using this method Al-doped ZnO (AZO) films, from compact to hierarchically structured as nano-tree forests, can be deposited.

Energy is one of the most important concepts in science and is not simple to define. This experiment will deal with two different kinds of energy: gravitational potential energy and translational kinetic energy. Gravitational potential energy is defined as the energy an object...

Direct Intrabronchial Administration to Improve the Selective Agent Deposition Within the Mouse Lung

Intratracheal (IT) administration of experimental agents in mice often results in asymmetric delivery to the distal lungs. In this report, we describe a direct intrabronchial (IB) approach to cannulate each lung in living mice non-operatively. This approach can be used to selectively administer agents to one lung or may be adapted to improve the symmetric agent delivery to both lungs.
