Oscilloscope

An oscilloscope is an electronic test instrument that displays how an electrical signal changes over time, making otherwise invisible voltage behavior measurable in engineering. A probe delivers the signal to the instrument, where input circuitry conditions it and a time base plots voltage against time; triggering stabilizes repeating waveforms for analysis. Engineers use oscilloscopes to measure amplitude, period, frequency, phase relationships, rise time, and transients, while diagnosing noise, distortion, timing faults, and circuit instability. The instrument supports design verification, troubleshooting, and laboratory learning across analog, digital, power, and embedded systems.

Chen, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, College of Science, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN Capacitors (C), inductors (L), and resistors (R) are each an important circuit element with distinct behaviors. A resistor dissipates energy and obeys Ohm's law, with its voltage proportional to its current. A capacitor stores electrical energy, with its current proportional to the rate of change of its voltage, while an inductor stores magnetic energy, with its voltage...

A Methodological Protocol and Considerations for Transcranial Ultrasonic Stimulation in Exploratory Clinical Human Studies

2025

Transcranial ultrasonic stimulation (TUS) is a promising non-invasive technique capable of stimulating the human brain at any depth, offering new therapeutic possibilities to treat various neurological conditions. This protocol provides a standardized yet adaptable empirical framework for applying TUS in neurotypical adults and patients with neurological diseases such as stroke.

Sound Waves and Doppler Shift

Source: Arianna Brown, Asantha Cooray, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, School of Physical Sciences, University of California, Irvine, CA Waves are disturbances that propagate through a material medium or empty space. Light waves can travel through a vacuum and some forms of matter, and are transverse in nature, which means that the oscillations are perpendicular to the direction of propagation. However, sound waves are pressure waves that travel through an elastic medium like air,...

We describe the generation of far-infrared radiation using an optically pumped molecular laser along with the measurement of their frequencies with heterodyne techniques. The experimental system and techniques are demonstrated using difluoromethane (CH2F2) as the laser medium whose results include three new laser emissions and eight measured laser frequencies.
