Tricalcium Aluminate

Tricalcium aluminate (C₃A) is a reactive mineral phase in Portland cement clinker that strongly influences setting, heat release, and sulfate resistance. When cement contacts water, C₃A hydrates rapidly; added gypsum supplies sulfate ions that moderate this reaction by forming ettringite, which can later convert to monosulfate as sulfate becomes depleted. This controlled hydration prevents flash setting and helps determine the cement paste’s early-age behavior. In engineering, understanding C₃A supports the design of cement formulations for workability, strength development, thermal management, and durability, particularly in concrete exposed to sulfate-rich soils, groundwater, or industrial environments.

Phase-Dependent Control of Trap Depth and Persistent Luminescence in Strontium Aluminate Phosphors

2025

This study investigates the standard optical measurements of two persistent luminescent ceramics: SAO-B (blue) and SAO-G (green), such as thermoluminescence (TL) and persistent luminescence (PersL). By controlling electron trap depth, this work innovates 'temperature-resolved' and 'time-resolved' dynamic anti-counterfeiting methods.

Christopher C.W. Hughes describes the utility of his culture system for studying angiogenesis in vitro. He explains the importance of fibroblasts that secrete a critical, yet unidentified, soluble factor that allow endothelial cells to form vessels in culture that branch, form proper lumens, and undergo anastamosis.

In Vitro Mineralization Assay: A Colorimetric Method to Quantify Osteoblast Calcium Deposits on Bone Graft Substitute by Alizarin Red S Staining and Extraction

2025

In this video, we describe a method for the detection of osteoblast-secreted calcium deposits using an anionic dye, Alizarin Red S. The cultured osteoblasts are first stained and then the dye is recovered for colorimetric quantification of calcium deposits or the degree of osteoblast mineralization.
