Dead Shoot Proportion

Dead shoot proportion is an ecological measure that expresses the number of dead plant shoots as a fraction or percentage of all shoots in a sampled population. Researchers calculate it by counting living and dead shoots within a defined area or plant group, then comparing dead shoots with the total shoot count to quantify mortality. This metric helps assess vegetation condition and track responses to environmental stressors such as drought, disturbance, grazing, disease, or unfavorable growing conditions. Repeated measurements can reveal changes in plant health, population dynamics, habitat quality, and ecosystem recovery over time.

Sample Proportion and Population Proportion

2023

Collecting samples or responses from an entire population takes significant time and effort, so a researcher collects responses from only a sample of that population. Suppose a study needs to collect information about a specific mobile application. After sample collection, the researcher analyzes the data and discovers that most individuals in the sample use that specific mobile application. The sample proportion measures the number of individuals in a sample who either use or don't use the...

Primary and Secondary Growth in Roots and Shoots

2026

Vascular plants, which account for over 90% of the Earth’s vegetation, all undergo primary growth—which lengthens roots and shoots. Many land plants, notably woody plants, also undergo secondary growth—which thickens roots and shoots.Primary and secondary growth can occur simultaneously in a plant. While primary growth occurs in newer plant regions, secondary growth transpires in regions that have completed primary growth. There are overlaps and distinctions between root growth and shoot growth.

The presented protocol uses flow cytometry to quantify the number of proliferating and dead cells in cultured mouse enteroids. This method is helpful to evaluate the effects of drug treatment on organoid proliferation and survival.

Testing a Claim about Population Proportion

2023

A complete procedure for testing a claim about a population proportion is provided here. There are two methods of testing a claim about a population proportion: (1) Using the sample proportion from the data where a binomial distribution is approximated to the normal distribution and (2) Using the binomial probabilities calculated from the data. The first method uses normal distribution as an approximation to the binomial distribution. The requirements are as follows: sample size is large...

Deep Fluorescence Observation in Rice Shoots via Clearing Technology

2022

The present protocol describes a clearing technique for rice shoots, which are difficult to prepare for internal structural observations owing to the hard, thick, or layered nature of the tissues. This method facilitates continuous and deep fluorescence observations, even in adult rice plants.
