High Moisture Pelleting

High moisture pelleting is a densification technique that compresses moisture-rich biomass or other particulate materials into compact, uniform pellets, improving handling and storage while reducing bulk volume. During processing, pressure and friction force particles together, while water influences material flow, binding, heat transfer, and pellet strength; the resulting pellets may require controlled drying to achieve suitable stability and energy performance. In environmental applications, the method can convert agricultural residues, organic wastes, or other wet feedstocks into more manageable solid products for transport, storage, or energy recovery. Its effectiveness depends on feedstock composition, moisture content, and processing conditions, which influence durability, emissions, and overall resource efficiency.

2016

In this study, a protocol was developed to produce good quality pellets using a flat die pellet mill at reduced specific energy consumption testing high-moisture corn stover and a starch based binder. The results indicated that adding a corn starch binder improved the pellet durability, reduced percent fines and decreased specific energy consumption.

Determination of Moisture Content in Soil

2023

Source: Laboratories of Dr. Ian Pepper and Dr. Charles Gerba - The University of Arizona Demonstrating Author: Bradley Schmitz Soils normally contain a finite amount of water, which can be expressed as the “soil moisture content.” This moisture exists within the pore spaces in between soil aggregates (inter-aggregate pore space) and within soil aggregates (intra-aggregate pore space) (Figure 1). Normally this pore space is occupied by air and/or water. If all the pores are occupied by air, the...

Moisture Content and Bulking of Aggregate

2024

The moisture content of aggregates is a crucial factor in construction, particularly in concrete mixing, as it influences the total water required in the mix. Moisture content represents the water coated on the exterior surface of the aggregate existing in a saturated and surface-dry condition. The total water content of a moist aggregate is the sum of its moisture content and water absorption. When aggregates are exposed to rain or sit in stockpiles, they absorb moisture, which must be...
