Lysimeter Installation

Lysimeter installation is the placement of a measurement system that isolates a defined volume of soil and vegetation to quantify water movement through an ecosystem. By containing an intact soil profile or root zone, a lysimeter enables researchers to record inputs such as precipitation and irrigation, outputs such as drainage and evapotranspiration, and changes in soil water storage under controlled field conditions. Proper installation preserves soil structure, minimizes disturbance, and maintains representative contact with surrounding ground. In environmental research, lysimeters support studies of water balance, contaminant or nutrient leaching, irrigation efficiency, and the effects of climate or land-use change on soil and groundwater resources.

This study presents an excavation method for investigating subsurface hydrological, geochemical, and microbiological heterogeneity of a soil lysimeter. The lysimeter simulates an artificial hillslope which was initially under homogeneous condition and had been subjected to approximately 5,000 mm of water over eight cycles of irrigation in an 18-month period.

Installation of Optical Windows in the Brain of Transgenic Mice to Image Neural Activities

2025

This video demonstrates the brain's neural activity recording through an optical window in transgenic mice. The mice express a fluorescent protein that enables the detection of neural activities. A small portion of the skull is carefully removed to install an optical window, and the skull is then covered with black cement to block light before imaging.

Installation Method to Enhance Quality Control for Fiber Reinforced Polymer Spike Anchors

This manuscript presents a method for controlling the quality of installation for spike anchors designed to delay delamination of externally bonded fiber reinforced polymers. The protocol includes the preparation of the drill hole and the insertion process. The most influential parameters on the efficiency of the anchors are discussed.

Surface Renewal: An Advanced Micrometeorological Method for Measuring and Processing Field-Scale Energy Flux Density Data

Surface renewal is a micrometeorological method that is being used increasingly to determine energy fluxes, but its technical complexity makes it inaccessible to a broad audience. We describe the steps needed to set up and calibrate a surface renewal field station, to acquire and process data, and to correctly interpret results.
