Microtopographic Profile Gauge

A microtopographic profile gauge is an instrument used to measure small-scale variations in the elevation and shape of a surface, providing quantitative descriptions of environmental terrain. It works by moving a sensing element, such as a probe or stylus, across a defined transect while recording changes in height relative to a reference level, producing a two-dimensional surface profile. These measurements help researchers characterize soil roughness, sediment features, erosion patterns, and fine-scale habitat structure. By converting subtle surface changes into reproducible data, the gauge supports environmental monitoring, comparisons among sites, and assessment of how natural processes or land use alter terrain.

Pressure Gauges

Most pressure gauges, like those on scuba tanks, are calibrated to read zero at atmospheric pressure. Readings from such gauges are called the gauge pressure, which is the pressure relative to atmospheric pressure. When the pressure inside the tank exceeds atmospheric pressure, the gauge reports a positive value. Some gauges are designed to measure negative pressure. For example, many physics experiments must take place in a vacuum chamber, a rigid chamber from which some of the air is pumped...

Design Example: Strain Gauge Bridge or Wheatstone Bridge

2024

The utilization of strain gauges as transducers for converting mechanical strain into electrical signals is a common practice in various engineering applications. These strain gauges are frequently integrated into Wheatstone bridge circuits to accurately measure parameters such as force or pressure. Within this context, each element within the circuit exhibits a resistance that undergoes subtle variations when subjected to mechanical strain. The primary objective is to convert minuscule...

2016

Here we describe how to build a robust spring-transport mechanism for a spinning rotor gauge. This device securely immobilizes the rotor and keeps it under vacuum during transportation. We also describe packaging that minimizes the risk of damage during transport. Tests show our design works for typical shocks during transport.

Expression Profiling with Microarrays

2023

Microarrays are important tools for profiling gene expression, and are based on complementary binding between probes that are attached to glass chips and nucleic acids derived from samples. Using these arrays, scientists can simultaneously evaluate the expression of thousands of genes. In addition, the expression profiles of different cells or tissue types can be compared, allowing researchers to deduce how the expression of different genes change during biological processes, and thus gain...

An In vitro System to Gauge the Thrombolytic Efficacy of Histotripsy and a Lytic Drug
