Nasal Lavage

Nasal lavage is a procedure that rinses the nasal passages with a sterile saline solution to remove mucus, particles, and microorganisms while sampling material from the upper airway. Fluid introduced into the nasal cavity loosens secretions and carries suspended cells, proteins, allergens, and microbial components into a collection vessel for analysis. In immunology and infection research, nasal lavage helps assess local inflammation, measure immune mediators, and detect or study respiratory pathogens. It can also support investigations of allergic disease, mucosal defense, and responses to infection or vaccination, providing a relatively noninvasive view of airway biology.

Saline nasal lavage can be used to sample the canine nasal immune microenvironment. Because the approach is relatively non-invasive and does not disrupt the nasal tissues, it can be performed serially. Cells and proteins collected from the nasal lavage technique can be processed for various laboratory analyses.

We describe a research technique for fiberoptic bronchoscopy and bronchoalveolar lavage using low pressure suction. The technique is used to harvest immune cells from the lung bronchoalveolar surfaces. Local anesthetic and mild conscious sedation (midazolam) is used. Subjects tolerate the procedure well and experience minimal side effects.

The health status of the lung is reflected by the type and number of immune cells that are present in the bronchioles of the lung. We describe a bronchoalveolar lavage technique that allows the isolation and study of nonadherent cells and soluble factors from the lower respiratory tract of mice.
