Real-time Infection Tracking

Real-time infection tracking is the continuous or repeated measurement of pathogen activity and host responses as an infection develops, rather than assessing disease only at a single endpoint. It works by collecting time-resolved signals, such as changes in pathogen abundance, infected-cell behavior, or immune activity, and relating them to the timing and progression of infection. In immunology and infection research, these measurements can reveal how infections spread, how immune defenses are recruited, and when treatment alters disease dynamics. The approach supports earlier detection, more precise characterization of host-pathogen interactions, and better evaluation of vaccines, antimicrobial therapies, and disease-control strategies.

2025

This video demonstrates a quantitative method for detecting viral infection using real-time reverse transcription PCR. The reverse transcription step converts the RNA to cDNA, which is then amplified via PCR cycles. The presence of viral RNA in the sample is confirmed by analyzing the amplification and dissociation curves of DNA obtained from the PCR.

A Microfluidic Device for Real-Time Imaging and Pressure Tracking During Biofilm Formation

2026

Source: Kurz, D. L., et al. Microfluidic Platform to Study Bioclogging in Porous Media. J. Vis. Exp. (2022)The video demonstrates the use of a microfluidic device to study biofilm formation. A bacterial suspension is introduced into the microchannel, followed by incubation to allow biofilm development. Flow is then resumed, and pressure monitoring along with imaging is used to detect biofilm formation and pore blockage over time.
