Sheep Choroid Plexus Cells

Sheep choroid plexus cells are specialized cells from the brain’s choroid plexus, a tissue that produces cerebrospinal fluid and regulates communication between blood and the central nervous system. Their epithelial cells form the blood–cerebrospinal fluid barrier through tight junctions, selectively controlling the movement of nutrients, signaling molecules, immune mediators, and potential pathogens. In immunology and infection research, these cells help model how inflammation, infection, and immune surveillance affect the brain’s protective interfaces. Studying sheep cells can support investigation of neuroinvasion, host–pathogen interactions, barrier disruption, and inflammatory responses in a biologically relevant large-animal system.

This video presentation shows a method of harvesting the two most important highly vascular structures that support forebrain function. They are the cerebral surface (superficial) vasculature along with associated meninges (MAV) and the choroid plexus which are necessary for cerebral blood flow and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) homeostasis.

The epithelial cells of the choroid plexus (CP) form the blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier (BCSFB). An in vitro model of the BCSFB employs human choroid plexus papilloma (HIBCPP) cells. This article describes culturing and basolateral infection of HIBCPP cells using a cell culture filter insert system.
