Anti-inflammatory Activity

Anti-inflammatory activity is the capacity of a substance, treatment, or biological process to reduce inflammation, the immune response that can protect tissues but also cause pain, swelling, and damage when prolonged. It works by limiting inflammatory signaling, immune-cell recruitment, or the production of mediators such as cytokines and prostaglandins that regulate vascular changes and tissue responses. In medicine, assessing anti-inflammatory activity helps characterize potential therapies for conditions including arthritis, asthma, skin disorders, and other diseases involving persistent inflammation. Laboratory assays and clinical studies measure these effects, supporting drug development, treatment selection, and efforts to reduce inflammation while preserving essential immune defense.

Nanoparticle-Mediated Enhanced Delivery of an Anti-Inflammatory Drug in Microglia-Like Cells

Take cultures of human monocyte-derived microglia-like cells.Introduce nanoparticles containing an anti-inflammatory drug into the experimental culture and the free drug into the control. The nanoparticles feature a hydrophilic shell and a hydrophobic core encapsulating the lipophilic drug. The cells endocytose the nanoparticles, which release the drug intracellularly, enhancing its delivery. The free drug enters by passive diffusion, a process constrained by the concentration gradient, which...

An In Vitro Method to Determine the Anti-Apoptotic Activity of Antibodies against TNFα

2025

This video demonstrates a technique for assessing the efficacy of antibodies against tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNFα), an inflammatory cytokine, through an in vitro bioanalytical approach. TNFα, when introduced to stressed cells, triggers apoptosis. However, binding to the antibodies confines TNFα, averting apoptosis. The degree of apoptosis is quantified using a bioluminescence assay.

We present an in vitro model which allows the study and analysis of coagulation in whole, non-anticoagulated blood. Anticoagulation in the system depends on the natural anticoagulation effect of healthy endothelial cells and endothelial cell activation will result in clotting.
