Artificial Tears

Artificial tears are lubricating ophthalmic preparations that supplement or replace aspects of the natural tear film, helping relieve dry, irritated, or gritty eyes. Their formulations commonly contain water, electrolytes, and viscosity-enhancing polymers that spread across the corneal surface, increase lubrication, and improve tear-film retention; some also include lipid components to reduce evaporation. Used in medicine for dry eye associated with environmental exposure, reduced tear production, aging, or certain treatments, artificial tears can improve comfort and support a healthier ocular surface. Comparing formulation properties, dosing frequency, and preservative content helps guide appropriate use and informs the development of longer-lasting therapies.

alamarBlue Assay: A Sensitive Fluorometric Method to Screen the Cytotoxic Effects of Artificial Tear Formulations on Metabolic Activity of Human Corneal Epithelial Cells

This video describes an in vitro fluorometric assay to assess the effects of artificial tear formulations on the cellular metabolic activity of corneal epithelial cells using resazurin-based Alamar blue solution. A non-toxic formulation maintains the cells in a healthy, metabolically active state, facilitating the reduction of resazurin into a highly fluorescent resorufin.

Capsulorhexis is an important step in phacoemulsification surgery. A surgeon creates a continous curvilinear tear on the anterior lens capsule by controlling the tearing vector forces. A peripherally extended tear is a serious complication. This video demonstrates a novel technique of rescuing capsular radial tear out using a cystotome.

The purpose of this protocol is to evaluate if different artificial tear formulations can protect human corneal epithelial cells from desiccation using an in vitro model. After exposure to artificial tear formulations and desiccation, human corneal epithelial cells are assessed for metabolic activity.

Natural Selection and Adaptive Evolution In natural settings, adaptive evolution takes place by natural selection, a process in which differences in traits lead to differences in survival and reproductive success between individuals. This happens because individuals with certain phenotypes have a higher probability of survival and/or produce more surviving offspring than individuals with other phenotypes. A classic example of this was demonstrated by Rosemary and Peter Grant studying the...

Observing Artificial Selection in Plants ExpandTo begin the experiment, collect five two-week old grown plants from the generation one population that appear healthy. Note: Plants should appear green, not wilted, and not have damaged leaves. Experimental Hypothesis: The experimental hypothesis for this lab might be that the number of lead trichomes varies naturally, but the average number will increase over generations if only plants with the highest number of trichomes are interbred or...
