Autologous Pericardium Valve

An autologous pericardium valve is a cardiac valve reconstructed from the patient’s own pericardial tissue, offering a biological alternative to manufactured prosthetic valves. During surgery, the pericardium is harvested, shaped into valve leaflets, and secured within the native valve position so the leaflets open and close with changing pressure to regulate one-way blood flow. This approach is used in valve repair or replacement, particularly when surgeons seek to avoid foreign prosthetic materials and their associated complications. By using living, patient-derived tissue, autologous pericardium valves support individualized cardiac reconstruction and remain an important focus in cardiovascular surgery and biomaterial research.

2022

This study demonstrates the feasibility and safety of developing an autologous pulmonary valve for implantation at the native pulmonary valve position by using a self-expandable Nitinol stent in an adult sheep model. This is a step toward developing transcatheter pulmonary valve replacement for patients with right ventricular outflow tract dysfunction.

Clinically relevant animal models of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) are needed to extend our knowledge of hemorrhagic stroke and to examine novel therapeutic strategies. In this study, we describe and evaluate two ICH models that implement unilateral injections of either autologous whole blood or bacterial collagenase into the basal ganglia (corpus striatum) of mice.

Protocol for Relative Hydrodynamic Assessment of Tri-leaflet Polymer Valves

There has been renewed interest in developing polymer valves. Here, the objectives are to demonstrate the feasibility of modifying a commercial pulse duplicator to accommodate tri-leaflet geometries and to define a protocol to present polymer valve hydrodynamic data in comparison to native and prosthetic valve data collected under near-identical conditions.

2017

This protocol describes the isolation, culture, and calcification of rat-derived valve interstitial cells, a highly physiological in vitro model of calcific aortic valve disease (CAVD). Exploitation of this rat model facilitates CAVD research in exploring the cell and molecular mechanisms that underlie this complex pathological process.
