Conscious Freely Moving Mice

Conscious freely moving mice are awake, unrestrained animals used to study behavior and physiology under conditions that preserve natural movement and responsiveness. In this approach, researchers monitor selected biological signals or deliver experimental interventions while mice move through an environment, allowing measurements to be linked with spontaneous activity, sensory cues, and task performance without anesthesia. The model supports medical research on brain function, pain, motor control, learning, and disease-related changes, while reducing confounding effects caused by immobilization or unconsciousness. Findings can help connect cellular and physiological mechanisms with observable behavior and improve the assessment of potential treatments.

This video demonstrates a method for recording neural activity in a freely moving mouse using fiber photometry. In this method, neurons in a specific brain region express a genetically encoded calcium indicator. A stimulus is applied to this brain region, and the stimulus-dependent change in fluorescence is measured to identify neural activity.
