Infrared Thermography

Infrared thermography is a noncontact imaging technique that measures infrared radiation emitted from an object and converts it into a map of surface temperature, making thermal patterns visible without ionizing radiation. In medicine, an infrared camera records differences in skin temperature, which reflect heat transfer at the body surface and can be influenced by blood flow, inflammation, metabolism, and environmental conditions. Clinicians and researchers use these thermal images to monitor circulation, inflammation, wound healing, musculoskeletal conditions, and responses to treatment. Because thermography is noninvasive and repeatable, it can support screening and longitudinal assessment, although temperature patterns require standardized imaging conditions and clinical interpretation alongside other evidence.

This method aims at locating vertical subsurface defects. Here, we couple a laser with a spatial light modulator and trigger its video input to heat a sample surface deterministically with two anti-phased modulated lines while acquiring highly resolved thermal images. The defect position is retrieved from evaluating thermal wave interference minima.
