Orthognathic Surgery Imaging

Orthognathic surgery imaging is the use of diagnostic images to evaluate jaw and facial relationships, identify skeletal abnormalities, and plan corrective surgery. Two-dimensional radiographs and three-dimensional computed tomography or cone-beam computed tomography capture dental, skeletal, and soft-tissue anatomy; clinicians analyze these images to assess malocclusion, asymmetry, airway-related structures, and the position of vital anatomical landmarks. Digital imaging supports cephalometric analysis, virtual surgical planning, and the design of patient-specific guides or splints. In medicine and oral and maxillofacial surgery, these methods improve communication, support more predictable repositioning of the jaws, and help evaluate postoperative outcomes.

This video and protocol demonstrate how to implant a glass-covered cranial window in rodents. These preparations can be used for chronic in vivo two-photon imaging of the neocortex over time scales of months. It may also be used for other types of imaging, including optical intrinsic signal imaging.

2016

Source: Kay Stewart, RVT, RLATG, CMAR; Valerie A. Schroeder, RVT, RLATG. University of Notre Dame, IN The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals1 dictates that rodent survival surgery be performed aseptically. Aseptic technique utilizes specific practices that minimize the contamination of the surgical site, including patient preparation, surgeon preparation, sterilization of instruments and other supplies, and the use of a clean and controlled environment. Presurgical planning,...

Rodent Stereotaxic Surgery

2023

Stereotaxic (or stereotactic) surgery is a method used to manipulate the brain of living animals. This technique allows researchers to accurately target deep structures within the brain through the use of a stereotaxic atlas, which provides the 3D coordinates of each area with respect to anatomical landmarks on the skull. After the skull is exposed, anesthetized animals are mounted on a specialized instrument known as a stereotaxic frame, which enables the precise placement of experimental...

The monitoring of extracellular neurotransmitter levels in distinct brain regions of freely moving animals offers insights on the link between neurotransmitter release and behavior. In vivo microdialysis coupled with electrochemical detection provides excellent anatomical and chemical resolution; and information on how basal neurotransmission is altered by pharmacological or physiological manipulations.
