Regional Function Assessment

Regional function assessment is a clinical evaluation of how well a specific anatomical region performs its normal roles, helping identify impairment, preserve function, and guide medical decisions. It combines patient history with inspection, palpation, movement analysis, strength or sensory testing, and other region-specific measures, often comparing findings between sides or with expected functional ranges. In medicine, this approach helps localize abnormalities, distinguish structural problems from functional limitations, establish baseline status, and track changes over time. Clinicians use the results to support diagnosis, plan treatment, evaluate recovery, and tailor rehabilitation to the patient’s needs.

Monitoring brain activity during upright motor tasks is of great value when investigating the neural source of movement disorders. Here, we demonstrate a protocol that combines functional near infrared spectroscopy with continuous monitoring of muscle and kinematic activity during 4 types of motor tasks.

Assessment of Dendritic Arborization in the Dentate Gyrus of the Hippocampal Region in Mice

We describe two methods for visualization and quantification of dendritic arborization in the hippocampus of mouse models: real-time and extended depth of field imaging. While the former method allows sophisticated topographical tracing and quantification of the extent of branching, the latter allows speedy visualization of the dendritic tree.

We present a hands-on, step-by-step, rapid protocol for mouse brain removal and dissection of discrete regions from fresh brain tissue. Obtaining brain regions for molecular analysis has become routine in many neuroscience labs. These brain regions are immediately frozen to obtain high quality transcriptomic data for system level analysis.

Capillaroscopy is a non-invasive, relatively inexpensive methodology for directly visualizing the microcirculation. The forearm blood flow technique provides accepted non-invasive measures of endothelial function.

Identification of Functional Protein Regions Through Chimeric Protein Construction

2019

Structurally related proteins frequently exert distinct biological functions. The exchange of equivalent regions of these proteins in order to create chimeric proteins constitutes an innovative approach to identify critical protein regions that are responsible for their functional divergence.
