Transbronchial Lung Biopsy

Transbronchial lung biopsy is a minimally invasive procedure that collects small samples of lung tissue through the airways, helping clinicians evaluate diffuse or localized pulmonary abnormalities without open surgery. During bronchoscopy, a flexible instrument advances into the bronchial tree, and biopsy forceps or another sampling device passes through the bronchoscope to remove tissue from targeted regions; imaging guidance may improve localization. Pathologists examine the specimens for infection, inflammation, fibrosis, malignancy, or transplant-related injury. The technique supports diagnosis and treatment planning while reducing recovery time compared with surgical biopsy, although clinicians must weigh its diagnostic value against risks such as bleeding and pneumothorax.

Substernal thyroid lesions are common, and need to be differentiated from malignancy. Obtaining percutaneous fine needle biopsy is not possible due to its retrosternal location. This article proposes a protocol for biopsy of substernal thyroid lesions using Endobronchial Ultrasound-guided Transbronchial Needle Aspiration (EBUS-TBNA).

Human Lung Dendritic Cells: Spatial Distribution and Phenotypic Identification in Endobronchial Biopsies Using Immunohistochemistry and Flow Cytometry

Lung-resident immune cells, including dendritic cells (DCs) in humans, are critical for defense against inhaled pathogens and allergens. However, due to the scarcity of human lung tissue, studies are limited. This work presents protocols to process human mucosal endobronchial biopsies for studying lung DCs using immunohistochemistry and flow cytometry.
