Von Frey Filament Testing

Von Frey filament testing is a behavioral method for measuring sensitivity to mechanical touch or pain, making it useful for assessing sensory nerve function. The test uses calibrated monofilaments that apply graded forces to the skin; a filament is pressed perpendicularly until it bends, and the subject’s withdrawal or detection response identifies a mechanical sensitivity threshold. In medicine and neuroscience, this approach helps characterize mechanical allodynia and hyperalgesia associated with peripheral neuropathy, inflammation, or nerve injury. Repeated measurements can track changes over time and evaluate disease progression or responses to analgesic and neuroprotective treatments.

The most notable symptom of migraine is severe head pain, and it is hypothesized that this is mediated by sensory neurons innervating the meninges. Here, we present a method to locally apply substances to the dura in a minimally invasive manner while using facial hypersensitivity as an output.
