Aging Model

An aging model is an experimental or computational system used to represent how biological aging develops and affects function over time. In neuroscience, these models examine age-related changes in neurons, synapses, neural circuits, and behavior by tracking cellular processes and functional decline under defined conditions. Researchers use them to investigate mechanisms of neurodegeneration, distinguish normal aging from disease, and evaluate potential interventions. By linking molecular and cellular changes to cognitive or behavioral outcomes, aging models provide controlled frameworks for studying brain health, comparing hypotheses, and guiding research on prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of age-associated neurological disorders.

An Introduction to Aging and Regeneration

2023

Tissues are maintained through a balance of cellular aging and regeneration. Aging refers to the gradual loss of cellular function, and regeneration is the repair of damaged tissue generally mediated by preexisting adult or somatic stem cells. Scientists are interested in understanding the biological mechanisms behind these two complex processes. By doing so, researchers may be able to use somatic stem cells to treat degenerative diseases and develop therapies that could delay the effects of...

Obtaining Specimens with Slowed, Accelerated and Reversed Aging in the Honey Bee Model

In honey bee workers, aging depends on social behaviors rather than on chronological age. Here we show how worker-types with very different aging patterns can be obtained and analyzed for cellular senescence.
