Chemiluminescent Substrate

A chemiluminescent substrate is a chemical compound that produces light during a reaction, enabling sensitive detection of a target molecule without external illumination. In common laboratory assays, horseradish peroxidase catalyzes the peroxide-dependent oxidation of luminol, generating an excited product that releases energy as visible light when it returns to its ground state. In neuroscience, this reaction supports Western blotting, immunoassays, and related methods for measuring neural proteins, receptors, and signaling molecules. Chemiluminescent detection can reveal low-abundance targets and help researchers quantify changes associated with neuronal function, development, disease, and treatment responses.
