Cortical Excitability Measurement

Cortical excitability measurement refers to assessing how readily populations of neurons in the cerebral cortex respond to stimulation, providing a functional index of neural responsiveness. In neuroscience, transcranial magnetic stimulation can activate cortical circuits, while motor-evoked potentials recorded from muscles quantify the resulting output; input-output curves and paired-pulse protocols further characterize response strength and inhibitory or facilitatory interactions. These measurements help investigate motor control, learning, plasticity, and changes in brain function associated with neurological disorders. They also support evaluation of how medications, rehabilitation, or other interventions alter cortical circuitry, linking physiological mechanisms to behavior and clinical outcomes.

2025

Source: Beom, J., et al. Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation to the Unilateral Hemisphere of Rat Brain. J. Vis. Exp. (2016)This video demonstrates the application of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in anesthetized rats to modulate cortical excitability. The procedure involves determining the motor threshold (MT) to establish baseline stimulation, followed by applying rTMS at an intensity above the MT to induce neuronal depolarization. This stimulation triggers...

(2019)This video demonstrates the process of real-time EEG-triggered transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to study cortical excitability. The procedure involves positioning the TMS coil over the motor cortex, synchronizing stimulation with specific phases of the EEG signal, and recording motor-evoked potentials (MEPs) to explore...

Using TMS to Measure Motor Excitability During Action Observation

2023

Source: Laboratories of Jonas T. Kaplan and Sarah I. Gimbel—University of Southern California Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique that involves passing current through an insulated coil placed against the scalp. A brief magnetic field is created by current in the coil, and because of the physical process of induction, this leads to a current in the nearby neural tissue. Depending on the duration, frequency, and magnitude of these magnetic...

Measuring gyrification (cortical folding) at any age represents a window into early brain development. Hence, we previously developed an algorithm to measure local gyrification at thousands of points over the hemisphere1. In this paper, we detail the computation of this local gyrification index.
