Craniotomy Exposure

Craniotomy exposure is a neurosurgical approach that temporarily opens the skull to provide controlled access to the brain, meninges, or intracranial blood vessels. After patient positioning and scalp preparation, the surgeon creates a bone flap, opens the dura mater, and develops a surgical corridor while protecting neural tissue and maintaining hemostasis; the bone flap is typically replaced at the end of the procedure. This technique supports procedures such as tumor resection, aneurysm clipping, hematoma evacuation, and functional mapping. Careful planning of the exposure improves visualization and instrument access while limiting disruption to healthy brain structures.

This video and protocol demonstrate how to implant a glass-covered cranial window in rodents. These preparations can be used for chronic in vivo two-photon imaging of the neocortex over time scales of months. It may also be used for other types of imaging, including optical intrinsic signal imaging.

In the current climate of scarce resources, new technologies are emerging that allow researchers to conduct studies cheaper, faster and with more precision. Here we describe the development of a bead-based salivary antibody multiplex immunoassay to measure human exposure to multiple environmental pathogens simultaneously.
