Fluorescence Plate Scanner

A fluorescence plate scanner is an instrument that measures fluorescent signals from samples arranged in microplate wells, enabling rapid, parallel analysis of biological reactions and cellular states. It illuminates each well with selected excitation wavelengths, collects emitted light through optical filters or monochromators, and converts signal intensity into quantitative data across multiple wavelengths or time points. In neuroscience, researchers use these measurements to assess intracellular calcium dynamics, receptor or enzyme activity, gene-expression reporters, and other fluorescence-based readouts in neuronal cultures or tissue-derived samples, supporting studies of signaling, pharmacology, and disease mechanisms.

2016

A scanner for imaging magnetic particles in planar samples was developed using the planar frequency mixing magnetic detection technique. The magnetic intermodulation product response from the nonlinear nonhysteretic magnetization of the particles is recorded upon a two-frequency excitation. It can be used to take 2D images of thin biological samples.

Jet Impinging on an Inclined Plate

2023

Source: Ricardo Mejia-Alvarez and Hussam Hikmat Jabbar, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI The goal of this experiment is to demonstrate how a fluid flow exerts forces on structures by conversion of dynamic pressure into static pressure. To this end, we will make a plane jet impinge on a flat plate and will measure the resulting pressure distribution along the plate. The resultant force will be estimated by integrating the product between the...

Corbo1 1 Department of Biological Sciences, Wagner College, 1 Campus Road, Staten Island NY, 10301 Quantitative assessment of prokaryotes can be onerous given their abundance, propensity for exponential proliferation, species diversity within a population, and specific physiological needs. Compounding this challenge, is the four-phase nature in which bacteria replicate (lag, log, stationary and death). The ability to accurately...
