Post-surgical Analgesia

Post-surgical analgesia is the prevention and treatment of pain after an operation, supporting recovery while reducing the physiological effects of acute nociception. It works by interrupting pain signaling at multiple levels, from injured tissues and peripheral nerves to spinal and brain pathways, using approaches such as local anesthetics, systemic analgesics, and regional nerve blocks. In neuroscience, studying these interventions clarifies how inflammation, neural sensitization, and descending pain modulation shape postoperative pain. Effective analgesia can improve mobility, sleep, and participation in rehabilitation while limiting complications associated with uncontrolled pain or excessive medication use.

Analgesia and Pain Management

Pain is critical to various clinical pathologies, provoking an urgent need for effective management. Pain, whether acute or chronic, is a complex neurochemical process. Its alleviation depends on the type, with nonopioid analgesics effective for mild to moderate pain, such as musculoskeletal or inflammatory pain, while neuropathic pain responds best to anticonvulsants, tricyclic antidepressants, or serotonin/norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors. For severe acute or chronic pain, opioids may be...

Ischemia-reperfusion Model of Acute Kidney Injury and Post Injury Fibrosis in Mice

We describe models of moderate and severe ischemia-reperfusion-induced kidney injury in which the mice undergo unilateral renal pedicle clamping followed by simultaneous or delayed contralateral nephrectomy, respectively. These models consistently give rise to renal dysfunction and post-injury fibrosis, but injury severity and survival are dependent on mouse background, age and surgical equipment.

Diffuse noxious inhibitory control, temporal summation and wound hyperalgesia testing are demonstrated in the obstetric patient. These tests evaluate inhibitory and excitatory mechanisms of pain processing and are here utilized to evaluate endogenous analgesia at different time-points during pregnancy and the peripartum period to help reveal individual s risk for persistent pain.
