Spontaneous Alternation

Spontaneous alternation is the tendency of an animal to choose a different arm or location on successive trials without explicit training or reward. In maze tasks such as the Y-maze or T-maze, the behavior depends on briefly retaining information about recently visited locations while exploring, engaging spatial working memory and related hippocampal and prefrontal networks. Neuroscientists use alternation performance to assess memory, exploration, and cognitive flexibility in rodents, including changes caused by aging, brain injury, neurological disease, or experimental compounds. Because performance can also reflect motivation and locomotor activity, researchers interpret it alongside additional behavioral measures.

Described here is a staged, behavioral screening approach that can be used to screen for compounds that exhibit in vivo efficacy on cognitive and functional motor behaviors in transgenic mouse models of β-amyloidosis and tauopathy. These methods are optimized to screen compounds for activity in short-term and working memory tasks.

Spontaneity

2020

A spontaneous process is one that occurs naturally under certain conditions. A nonspontaneous process, on the other hand, will not take place unless it is “driven” by the continual input of energy from an external source. Processes have a natural tendency to occur in one direction under a given set of conditions. Water will naturally flow downhill (spontaneous process), but uphill flow (nonspontaneous process) requires outside intervention such as the use of a pump. Iron exposed to the earth’s...

Alternative RNA Splicing

2020

Alternative RNA splicing is the regulated splicing of exons and introns to produce different mature mRNAs from a single pre-mRNA. Unlike in constitutive splicing where a single gene produces a single type of mRNA, alternative splicing allows an organism to produce multiple proteins from a single gene and plays an important role in protein diversity. There are five types of alternative RNA splicing that vary in the ways the pre-mRNA segments are removed or retained in the mature mRNA. The first...

Determination of the Spontaneous Locomotor Activity in Drosophila melanogaster

Drosophila melanogaster are useful in studying genetic or environmental manipulations that affect behaviors such as spontaneous locomotor activity. Here we describe a protocol that utilizes monitors with infrared beams and data analysis software to quantify spontaneous locomotor...

Null and Alternative Hypotheses

2023

The actual hypothesis testing begins by considering two hypotheses. They are termed the null hypothesis and the alternative hypothesis. These hypotheses contain opposing viewpoints. The null hypothesis, denoted by H0 is a statement of no difference between the variables—they are not related. This can often be considered the status quo. As a result if you cannot accept the null, it requires some action. The alternative hypothesis, denoted by H1 or Ha, is a claim about the population that is...
