Composite Autonomic Severity Score

The Composite Autonomic Severity Score (CASS) is a standardized clinical measure of the severity and distribution of autonomic nervous system dysfunction. It integrates results from an autonomic reflex screen, including cardiovagal testing of heart-rate responses, adrenergic assessment during the Valsalva maneuver and tilt-table testing, and sudomotor evaluation with quantitative sudomotor axon reflex testing. By combining these domain-specific findings into a score from 0 to 10, CASS helps quantify autonomic impairment, distinguish patterns of dysfunction, and monitor change over time. In pharmacology, it supports evaluation of drug effects on autonomic regulation and helps characterize treatment-related changes in cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and sweating responses.

We describe a protocol for the rapid and sensitive quantification of disease severity in mouse models of cerebellar ataxia. Measures include hind limb clasping, ledge test, gait and kyphosis. This protocol effectively discriminates between affected and non-affected individuals, and detects the progression of affected individuals over time.

Standardized, comprehensive and fully quantitative testing of autonomic functions is described. The autonomic tests consist of evaluation of all three major autonomic domains including cardiovagal, adrenergic and sudomotor. The severity and distribution of dysautonomia is quantitated using Composite Autonomic Severity Scores.

Experimental Implementation of a New Composite Fabrication Method: Exposing Bare Fibers on the Composite Surface by the Soft Layer Method

A protocol to expose bare fibers on the composite surface by eliminating resin rich area is presented. The fibers are exposed during fabrication of the composites, not by the post surface treatment. The exposed carbon composites exhibit high electrical conductivity in the through-thickness direction and high mechanical property.

Measuring Cardiac Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) Activity in Children

Measurement of autonomic nervous system activity usually confines the researcher and participant to the laboratory, which may provide an intimidating environment to children. The VU University Ambulatory Monitoring System (VU-AMS) device can record cardiac autonomic control in any setting. The VU-AMS proved very amenable to testing in children.

Flexible Colonoscopy in Mice to Evaluate the Severity of Colitis and Colorectal Tumors Using a Validated Endoscopic Scoring System

Over the past few years, new generation endoscopes have emerged as important diagnostic research aids for evaluating murine colitis and colorectal tumors. We present herein a detailed protocol for endoscopic assessment of inflammation and colorectal tumors in mice, as well as a novel scoring system that uses decimal identifiers to document the endoscopic severity of colitis and colorectal tumors.
