Rib Raising Technique

Rib raising technique is an osteopathic manipulative procedure that mobilizes the ribs and adjacent thoracic tissues to influence musculoskeletal and autonomic function. With the patient positioned to expose the rib angles, the practitioner applies gentle anterior and lateral traction, often coordinating the movement with respiration, to improve rib mobility and affect tissues near the thoracic sympathetic chain. In pharmacology-related education and research, the technique provides a nonpharmacologic model for examining autonomic regulation and physiological responses alongside medication-based interventions. Its clinical relevance depends on accurate anatomical application, patient-specific assessment, and evidence evaluating outcomes such as comfort, respiratory mechanics, and autonomic activity.

Ribs are curved, flattened bones forming the thoracic cavity wall with the thoracic muscles. There are 12 pairs of thoracic ribs. The posterior ends of all the ribs articulate with the T1–T12 thoracic vertebrae. In contrast, the anterior ends of most ribs attach to the sternum via their costal cartilages. Parts of a Typical Rib A typical rib has a head, neck, and body. The posterior end of the rib is called the head, followed by a narrow neck. The head articulates primarily with the costal facet...

The surgical procedure used to induce experimental myocardial infarction in mice begins with left thoracotomy between the third and the fourth ribs in order to visualize the anterior surface of the heart and left lung. The left coronary artery is ligated, the chest is closed and the mouse is allowed to recover spontaneously.
