Peripheral Persuasion

Peripheral persuasion is a form of attitude change that occurs when people respond to indirect cues rather than carefully evaluating the central merits of a message. In the elaboration likelihood model, this peripheral route becomes more likely when motivation, ability, or opportunity to process information is limited, allowing cues such as source credibility, attractiveness, emotional appeal, or social consensus to influence judgment. Peripheral persuasion helps explain how advertising, political communication, health campaigns, and interpersonal messages shape opinions without extensive reasoning. Its effects can be rapid but often less stable, making it important for understanding when attitudes persist or change.
