Sleep Driving

Sleep driving is a parasomnia in which a person drives or attempts to drive during sleep, typically with little awareness and limited recall afterward. It is understood as a partial arousal from sleep: brain systems controlling learned motor actions may become active while conscious monitoring, judgment, and memory remain insufficient for safe decision-making; episodes can occur alongside sleepwalking or other sleep disturbances. In psychology and sleep research, studying sleep driving helps clinicians distinguish parasomnias from intentional or awake impaired driving, assess contributing sleep, medication, or substance factors, and develop safety-focused interventions, making accurate recognition important for protecting individuals and others.
