The nervous system helps the body sense, move, and respond. It works through a network of nerve cells that carry signals around the body. This system has two main parts: the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system.

The central nervous system, or CNS, includes the brain and spinal cord. The brain acts as the body’s control center. It processes sensory information and helps coordinate responses. The spinal cord serves as a major pathway for signals between the brain and the rest of the body.

The peripheral nervous system, or PNS, extends from the CNS to the limbs and organs. It helps the brain and spinal cord communicate with the farthest parts of the body. The PNS has two main branches: the somatic nervous system and the autonomic nervous system.

The somatic nervous system carries sensory information from sensory receptors to the CNS. It also sends motor signals from the CNS to muscles so the body can move. This system allows voluntary control of skeletal muscles and also helps mediate reflex actions. The autonomic nervous system controls involuntary processes such as breathing, heart rate, digestion, and glandular activity.

The autonomic nervous system has two parts. The sympathetic nervous system prepares the body for stress with the “fight or flight” response. It can increase heart rate, redirect blood flow to muscles, and release stored energy. The parasympathetic nervous system supports “rest and digest” functions. It helps conserve energy, supports digestion, lowers heart rate, and helps the body recover from stress.

Together, the CNS and PNS coordinate complex behaviors and help maintain homeostasis. This interaction lets the body respond to internal and external stimuli. It also supports overall health and normal function.
