Q1: What is biodiversity and why do scientists need to measure it?
Biodiversity is the variety of organisms in an ecosystem. Scientists must measure it to protect ecosystems and understand their health. Measuring biodiversity involves determining how many different species live together in a particular space, which helps researchers assess ecosystem resilience and identify areas needing conservation efforts.
Q2: How do scientists use quadrats and transects to sample biodiversity?
Quadrats are frames of fixed size placed randomly in an environment to count species in small sections. Transects involve stretching lines across an area and placing quadrats at regular intervals along them. Both methods avoid the impossibility of counting every organism in an entire ecosystem, allowing scientists to estimate total biodiversity from representative samples.
Q3: What does a species accumulation curve reveal about an ecosystem?
A species accumulation curve plots cumulative species found against the number of quadrats sampled. The curve's asymptote represents an estimate of the total number of species supported by the environment. Even if the asymptote is never reached due to rare species, biologists can estimate total species present based on the curve's trajectory and shape.
