Glycerol Assay

A glycerol assay is a biochemical method for measuring glycerol concentration in samples such as blood, cell extracts, food products, or reaction mixtures. In common enzymatic formats, glycerol is phosphorylated by glycerol kinase to form glycerol-3-phosphate, which is subsequently oxidized through coupled reactions that generate a colorimetric or fluorescent signal proportional to the glycerol present. These assays support studies of triglyceride breakdown, lipolysis, lipid metabolism, and enzyme activity, while also enabling quality control in biological and food-related samples. Accurate glycerol measurement helps researchers evaluate energy metabolism and distinguish free glycerol from glycerol released during triglyceride analysis.

2026

Here, we present a simple and low-cost glycerol displacement method based on Archimedes' principle for measuring lead-acid battery electrode porosities. The method demonstrates good reproducibility and is safer than traditional techniques, requiring low-hazard chemicals and equipment. Combining the technique with microstructural analysis by X-ray diffraction provides information on battery electrode properties and degradation.

Synthesis and fabrication of electrospun long fibers spanning a larger deposit area via a newly designed collector from a novel biodegradable polymer named poly(glycerol-dodecanoate) (PGD) was reported. The fibers were able to support the growth of cells derived from mouse pluripotent stem cells.

Examine Chemoavoidance Behavior in Transgenic Worms Using Osmotic Avoidance Assay

2025

This video describes an osmotic avoidance assay to examine chemoavoidance behavior in a transgenic worm model. Avoidance behavior is tested in a plate in the presence of a high-osmotic barrier and chemoattractant. The worms with a functional loss of neurons get attracted by the chemoattractant, cross the high-osmotic barrier, and become paralyzed in the trap zone because of the anesthetic solution.

The TUNEL Assay

2023

One of the hallmarks of apoptosis is the nuclear DNA fragmentation by nucleases. These enzymes are activated by caspases, the family of proteins that execute the cell death program. TUNEL assay is a method that takes advantage of this feature to detect apoptotic cells. In this assay, an enzyme called terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase catalyzes the addition of dUTP nucleotides to the free 3’ ends of fragmented DNA. By using dUTPs that are labeled with chemical tags that can produce...
