Isotopologue Pattern Detection

Isotopologue pattern detection is the identification and interpretation of molecules that differ in the number or position of stable isotopes, providing insight into biochemical composition and metabolism. In mass spectrometry, isotopologues generate characteristic isotope distributions because substituted atoms alter molecular mass; software compares observed mass-to-charge patterns with theoretical or reference distributions to assign molecular formulas and label incorporation. This approach supports stable-isotope tracing, enabling researchers to follow carbon, nitrogen, or other elements through metabolic pathways and quantify biosynthetic flux. It also improves metabolite identification, reveals reaction origins, and helps connect molecular changes with cellular physiology in biochemistry and related fields.

2013

We demonstrate methods for the detection of architectural distortion in prior mammograms. Oriented structures are analyzed using Gabor filters and phase portraits to detect sites of radiating tissue patterns. Each site is characterized and classified using measures to represent spiculating patterns. The methods should assist in the detection of breast cancer.

This protocol is successfully used to quantitatively detect levels and spatial patterns of mRNA expression in multiple tissue types across vertebrate species. The method can detect low abundance transcripts and allows processing of hundreds of slides simultaneously. We present this protocol using expression profiling of avian embryonic brain formation as an example.

Cross-Modal Multivariate Pattern Analysis

Classical multivariate pattern analysis predicts sensory stimuli a subject perceives from neural activity in the corresponding cortices (e.g. visual stimuli from activity in visual cortex). Here, we apply pattern analysis cross-modally and show that sound- and touch-implying visual stimuli can be predicted from activity in auditory and somatosensory cortices, respectively.
